Each year, in May, the WV GSA hosts a Lavender Ceremony to celebrate our graduating LGBTQ+ and Ally seniors. The evening is MAGICAL! We recognize and celebrate our seniors with a wonderful event, highlighting their accomplishments. We feature a keynote speech from a prominent member, ally, or activist from the LGBTQ+ community. We also provide an outlet for student speeches, recognition of faculty allies, and a musical performance. Senior students are awarded certificates, and treat filled swag bags, made possible by contributions from the community.
Lavender ceremonies occur at most colleges and universities, but it is unique to the high school setting at WVHS. The ceremony provides a much needed visibility for our LGBTQ+ students. At Waubonsie, LGBTQ+ students know that they are CELEBRATED.
Our inaugural event in 2017 was covered by the Naperville Sun
Our 2020 Lavender Ceremony was held online. The WV GSA dedicated a website for the seniors, we celebrated on social media and certificates were delivered to our honorees' homes.
